How often should a small business post on social media?

Updated November 7, 2026

A good starting point for most small businesses is three to five posts a week, spread across the networks you use. There is no magic number. What matters most is that you can keep it up every week, because a feed that goes quiet for a month tells customers you may have closed.

Consistency beats volume

A steady three posts a week for a year does more for you than ten posts a week for two weeks. Pick a pace you can sustain on your busiest week, not your quietest.

A sensible way to choose

  • Just starting, or very busy: 3 posts a week on one or two networks.
  • Ready to grow: 5 posts a week, one every weekday.
  • More to say and the time or help to say it well: more than 5, but only if quality holds.

Quality still matters

Five thoughtful posts beat ten filler posts. If you are running out of things to say, reduce the number rather than repeating yourself.

Match the network

Facebook and Instagram reward regular posting for local customers. LinkedIn works with fewer, more considered posts, often two or three a week. You do not have to post the same number everywhere.

Plan the week, then stop thinking about it

The businesses that keep going plan a week at a time and schedule it, instead of deciding every morning. Whether you do that yourself or use a tool or service, the planning is what makes it sustainable.

Common questions

Is posting every day necessary?

No. Every weekday is a good target if you can keep quality up, but three to five posts a week is plenty for most local businesses.

What if I miss a week?

Pick up where you left off. A short gap is normal. A long silence is what to avoid, which is why scheduling a week ahead helps.
